Cabo San Lucas Fish Report - March 7, 2011 to

Cabo San Lucas weekly fish report for the Los Cabos
area provided by Captain George Landrum
of Fly Hooker Sportfishing here in Cabo San Lucas,
Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

|
Weather: Warm
again! All right, our morning lows have been
in the mid to high 60's, this morning it was
68 degrees as we drove to the marina. Our
daytime highs have been warm as well,
getting into the high 80's. It's starting to
feel like Cabo again as we have had sunny
skies all week long and this beautiful
weather!
Water: The swells have been small on both
sides of the Cape and the wind has been
light so there has been excellent surface
conditions this past week. The only problem
has been the water temperature. On both
sides of the Cape the water has been below
70 degrees, around 68 degrees for the most
part. It has been slightly warmer up toward
the Punta Gorda area on the Cortez side, and
we did see an area of 72 degree water for a
little while around the 1150 as well, but
things are constantly changing. The water on
the Pacific side has been pretty green most
of the week and we had the small tsunami
swell (2 feet) on Friday that some of the
guys are saying caused a bit more
off-colored water along the beach as well.
Bait: No
change in the bait availability. Caballito,
a few Mackerel and a scattering of misc.
other large baits could be bought at $3 each
and if you were quick and lucky you could
get a scoop of Sardinas for $25.
FISHING
Billfish:
Striped Marlin are still mostly a non-event
for us, unlike a few years ago. Boats are
still finding fish around the 95 spot to the
1150 and out past there, but they are not
biting very well. A lucky boat would get
four fish released this week while most of
the boats were lucky to see four fish, let
alone get one of them to bite. Rigged dead
bait seemed to work better than live bait,
and one of the reasons may be the large
number of squid in the area. You can see
them on the depth finder and they are 9-15
inches long, perfect food and easy for the
Marlin to feed on. There have been a few
scattered fish found elsewhere, but no
concentrations.
Yellowfin
Tuna: The few Yellowfin tuna that have been
found have mostly been smaller fish in the
20 pound class or smaller. There were
reports early in the week of a few schools
of fish that were a bit larger, averaging 40
pounds, but they appear to have moved out of
the area. Most of the dependable action has
been in the Punta Gorda, Gorda Banks area
with Sardinas as bait. Even then the bite
has been fairly slow. Of course there are
always exception in any type of fishing, and
there was one day last week, Thursday I
think, where 6 boats headed south to try and
find the porpoise so they could get Tuna and
one of them got lucky, ending up with over
20 fish while the other boats skunked out.
That's fishing, but it sounds to me as if
that boat won't be getting any radio calls
about found fish from any of his buddies in
the near future!
Dorado:
Repeat of last week with a few flags were
flying, but just like last week they were
mostly for smaller fish caught by boats
fishing right along the beach for Sierra. If
you stomped on them they might have been
stretched to 21 inches and weigh 3 pounds,
sigh. There were a few exceptions as some
fish in the 20 pound class were caught in
the warmer water where the Striped Marlin
were found.
Wahoo: The
warmer water areas did deliver a few
offshore Wahoo this week, in the same area
where the Striped Marlin and Dorado were
found. Anyone see a pattern here yet?

Weekly Fishing Report by Picante Sportfishing
January 4th to
January 11th. 2010
Our fishing report is compiled from the weekly
catches of our fleet. We’ll update the report every
Monday The “El Nino” conditions persist in the Pacific
as the first week on the New Year is behind us. Warm
water coming out of the southwest and the lack of any
Northwest winds are keeping even the edges of our
fishing range very warm.
The coolest water is strangely enough in the Sea of
Cortez as the Northeast winds are pushing the warm water
south.
The Striped Marlin bite is spotty at best on the pacific
side from the Lighthouseto the Golden Gate Bank. Inside
along the sandy beaches Sierra Mackerel are keeping our
24’ Shamrock clients happy with this great tasting fish.
On January 4th. Mr. Janiak and his family
fished aboard out 32’ Cabo Express “Picante Express”
with Captain Antonio “Nino” Romero at the helm. They
experienced one of those days that they will never
forget releasing 4 Striped Marlin along with spotting
lots of whales. On the 5th. Mr. Taylor and
his family traveled out of the chilly northeast USA to
our desert paradise and also spent the day on the
“Picante Express”. They released a Striped Marlin and
boated 8 Dorado. On the 10th. Mr. Threlkeld
and his family fished on our 35’ Cabo Flybridge “Picante
Pride” with Captain Gregorio “Goyo” Lieras at the helm
releasing a Striped Marlin and boating 8 Dorado.

Weekly Fish Report
Overall Catch Success Rate: 94%
December 18th, 2009 to December 31st,
2009
Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
|
|
BILLFISH: We
finished out the year on a good note, with a
high overall catch success rate for all
species combined, however the marlin catches
could have been better, but then again this
was a rare “blue moon” month, in other words
two full moons in one month, which will not
take place again for another 19 years.
Marlin tend to eat less around the full
moon, as they have an opportunity to feed
during nighttime and are less hungry during
the day. This didn’t stop “Bill Collector”
though, they did amazingly well on December
18th, catching and releasing fourteen
striped marlin for Stephen Palmer from
London, England, fishing alone (crew aboard)
at Los Arcos with live bait. We also heard
of another huge blue marlin, this one was
caught aboard a boat aptly named “Blue
Marlin” and was 800 lbs. We don’t have all
the details but did see the photo. We had a
few smallish blue marlin on other boats such
as an approximate 200 lb’er released aboard
“Andrea” after taking a purple lure at
Gaspareño for Mark Schafer from Edmonton,
Canada. John Haskell from Omaha, Nebraska
also released a small blue aboard “Tracy
Ann” as well as a striped marlin on December
18th. A couple of days later this boat
caught and released a baby blue marlin, no
more than a foot and a half long for
regulars, Billy and Joan Daughdrill , from
Pensacola, Florida. The weather still
continues to be warmer than normal
accounting for blue marlin still in the area
and a resurgence of dorado. The average
catch was one striped marlin but others did
better; “La Brisa” released four marlin,
close to the Old Lighthouse for Julia, Greg
& Jordan Jung, fishing with Ross & Glenn
Aske, all from Austin, Texas on December
21st and “C Rod” released three and got
twelve tuna and a dorado for the Carey
family from St. Louis, Missouri. Fifty two
percent of charters caught billfish this
week consisting of 45 striped marlin, 3 blue
marlin and 1 sailfish, all released.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado
reclaimed is throne as king of Cabo
sportfish this week, with a whopping 421
caught by our anglers, giving us a seventy
eight percent catch success rate for this
species. Catches ranged from one, up to the
top day, of twenty nine, aboard “Tracy Ann”
for the Daughdrills from Pensacola,
Florida. Not all fish are being kept with a
lot of the smaller fish returned to the
water. We were surprised by rain, pretty
heavy, on December 28th, which lasted most
of the day but which the dorado seemed to
like, as it washed stuff down into the sea,
making them easier to find, congregating
under debris. Dorado were found along the
Pacific coast from the Old Lighthouse to
Golden Gate, quite close to shore taking
both live bait and assorted color lures.
Weights were from 12 to 40 lbs. Nineteen
percent of boats caught yellow fin tuna with
the highest catch of 22 fish in a day being
aboard “Rebecca” from Thomas McLaughlin,
from San Francisco. The fish took a
combination of lures and live bait just
outside the Golden Gate; others were found 7
miles off of the Cerros de Arena. Weights on
the tuna are smallish at no more than 25
lbs. We had quite a lot of wahoo this week,
but fish were usually 25 to 35 lbs and
rarely over 40 lbs, though Howard Kessler
from New York did get a 50 lb’er at Migriño
aboard “Tracy Ann”. Roosterfish have started
putting in an appearance as have sierra and
mako sharks up to 50 lbs.
LOCATION: Pacific: Lighthouse to
Golden Gate, fairly close to shore.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Just
beautiful, mostly clear skies, calm seas.
BEST LURES: Live
bait, guacamaya lures, petroleros.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75

BILLFISH: This week was not the best for billfish, but we
are still seeing action, besides, a lot of crews were opting for
what was a guaranteed catch this week, on dorado or tuna and
decided to wait it out on the marlin front. Nevertheless we did
have some nice catches. This period started out with a celebrity
catching his first marlin on his birthday; Alvin Joiner, better
known as Xzibit the host of MTV’s Pimp My Ride, as well as being
a rapper, singer and actor, fished aboard “Salsa” 70 ft Hatteras,
on September 19th. His fish was a striped marlin estimated at
140 lbs taken 6 miles from San Jaime on a live caballito. Next
day out Bruce Schaffer from Atlanta fishing with Don Skover from
Bentley, Michigan released a blue marlin, estimated just over
200 lbs, on a black and red lure, 6 miles from Los Arcos on the
Pacific, aboard 28 ft “Andrea”. One other notable catch was a
220 lb blue marlin taken on September 21st, also aboard “Andrea”
22 miles south of Cabo by Randall and Denise Wren from Oro
Valley, Arizona; they also boated three tuna up to 40 lbs. The
marlin took a red, green and orange lure, locally known as a “guacamayo”,
or parrot lure. This same day “La Brisa” fished the same area,
but a little further at 25 miles and released two striped marlin
and boated a 154 lb tuna…this was definitely the tuna boat his
week, for Gabe Zalazar and Ryan Woodward. Thirty three percent
of charters caught billfish this week consisting of 8 striped
marlin, 1 sailfish and 2 blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna was the number one catch in
Cabo this week with sixty three percent to boats catching from
one to ten in day. Our top angler was a lady, who showed amazing
stamina in the heat as she battled a huge yellowfin tuna aboard
“La Brisa” at the Jaime Bank. The three hour fight produced a
200 lb fish, weighing approximately twice that of angler Heather
DeRamus from Richmond, Texas, after it took a black and green
lure on 80 lb test. Second largest fish was that mentioned
above, also aboard “La Brisa” at 145 lbs. Weights were as low as
15 lbs on the tuna but we had many in the 50 to 80 lb class too.
Dorado catches played second fiddle to the tuna this week with
fifty three percent of boats catching from one to five in a day.
Weights were from 15 to 40 lbs, with the largest a 55 lb’er.
Just one small wahoo this week at 28 lbs aboard “Rebecca”. Not
much for our anglers inshore as they were all up on the Pacific.

Every day can be different this time of the year. The last few
days have been terrific!
Mark Rayor, Vista Sea Sport, reported,
“Yesterday, we fished straight east about 15
miles. There was a wide open dorado bite to
the north of us. Although we saw jumpers all
over, the marlin didn’t bite until the
afternoon and we ended up with two. Our
second one was only 4.5 miles from the
house.”
Beach action was best from La Ribera to the lighthouse with
numerous small schools of sardina attracting roosters, jacks and
ladyfish right up to the shore line.
Cerralvo Island fishing report:
“Outside the warm water bulge continues to produce dorado on the
buoys, while yellowtail action is slightly slower but still
good. Sierra, cabrilla and pargo are abundant inshore and the
winds are calming more and more.” Tim Hatler

Weekly fish report based on the catches of Pisces Fleet
Sportfishing, by Tracy Ehrenberg. This fishing report is
normally updated and posted each Saturday and also indicates
noteworthy catches of other fishing fleets and private
yachts in the Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos areas.
BILLFISH: Again a very slow week for
marlin, with boats again impeded from getting up the Pacific
due to blustery winds. In fact just eighteen percent of
charters caught marlin this week, with our luckiest boat
“Andrea” the only boat to catch more than one, with a double
header on April 1st for Robert Deniver, Joe Delp, Frank
Phillips and Sedro Wooley from Idaho and Washington
respectively, releasing the two fish at the 11.50 spot, one
taken on a live caballito the other on a orange and black
lure. The other marlin caught were found off of the Old
Lighthouse and Chileno. Our total catch for the week was
just seven marlin, but again this is quite normal for this
time of year. We are already hearing reports of good numbers
of marlin at Destiladera on the Cortez side so boats will
begin fishing that way now.
OTHER SPECIES: Even though fishing was slow
for marlin it was good for small game with plenty of sierra
available; boats caught up to ten in a day, still some very
nice yellowtail around with catches also of up to ten in one
day. There were jack crevalle, skipjacks and needlefish. One
boat caught 30 squid up to 40 lbs. Dorado catches rebounded
a little giving us a catch rate of fifty five percent for
charters, with the number of fish caught between one and
four. “La Brisa” had one of the larger dorado of the week
for George Kreiner, from Buffalo New York, who took a 40
lb’er on a red and green lure, 28 miles out from the Old
Lighthouse. We also caught a few solitary tuna, with the
exception being “Bottom Line” with nine from 22 to 30 lbs
for Rick Stell, Alan Wolfe and Jim Power from Huntsville,
North Carolina, I miles out from Chileno.
LOCATION: There was no one set place as the
boats fished in different areas, but basically between Old
Lighthouse and Chileno.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy and rough on the
Pacific, breezes on the Cortez, with calm to moderate seas,
clear skies.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-71 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, orange and green
lures, Mexican flag, dead bait, cedar plugs.

March 28, 2009 - Dorado
Saturday
It’s a great afternoon in Cabo San Lucas,
the sun still shinning high in the sky
awarding us with a temperature of 75 degrees
and wind coming from the south east at 12
mph.
Playing out in the water for the second day
in a row were George and Ron Powell along
with two of their buddies. The vessel of the
day was our 32’ RedBeam led by Captain
Marcial and Mate Mu~neca (translation: doll?
I’m still not sure why they call him that,
maybe next week). They matched yesterday
with another gorgeous Dorado. Besides
catching dinner they got to do a bit of
whale watching out on the sea of Cortez as
well as spotting plenty of marlin (guess
they weren’t hungry), dolphins and manta
rays.
On our other 32’ RumRunnin, Captain Javier
and Mate Mickey headed out to the sea of
Cortez as well, parking in front of Cabo’s
stunning Chileno bay known for the best
snorkeling in the area. Hailing from Sioux
Falls, South Dakota, Scott Jones and his
wife were out to catch a meal this morning
and that they did, bringing in two more
Dorado’s. Along the way they were visited by
a mother whale and her calf and teased by a
few marlins as well.
Stumbling in an hour or so after sunrise, and after the two
other groups, was our bachelor party of eight. Heck, who can
blame them. Unfortunately it seems that they weren’t the only
ones with hangovers as the fish seemed to duck away into their
own private havens. After a courageous attempt, the group
decided to head back to dry land where the ground doesn’t move
so much. At least they were well prepped for their day with cold
beer!
March 29, 2009 - Mucho Viento ... Translation = a lot of
wind.
Lots of wind on the water today and some interesting water temps
as well. Alex and Omar on El Nuevo and ReelRum headed back to
the Pacific today towards the Jaime Bank. 69 degree water was
waiting for them and they both quickly headed south. Omar made a
big loop to the south with Ryan Dick and Ericka Murphy. They
cruised out almost 20 miles at one point and finally found some
action. They got into a nice school of porpoise and found some
TUNA. They weren't able to get too many bites, but they did
succeed in bringing in the first Yellowfin of the year for
RedRum anglers. Congrats guys, great stuff.
Alex on El Nuevo with the Upshaw party also made a turn towards
the south and the warmer water and was able to find Dorado. Alex
and Ramon are making quite a team and they were able to get 5 or
6 strikes throughout the day. The Upshaw crew was able to bring
in one really nice Dorado and they fought with several others,
one for more than 20 minutes before the fish spit the hook.
Spent some time in the office with the crew after they got back
and really enjoyed their company. Hope to see them back in Cabo
soon.
Winds should die down a bit tomorrow. Hopefully we can find that
school of porpoise again, and get those Dorado to stay on the
line.
March 30, 2009 - Awesome day on the water for RedRum
anglers ...
Today was a fabulous day for RedRum, a little windy but
that didn't stop the fish from biting. The crews headed out to
the warm water they found 15-20 miles straight off the Arch and
once again had great success. With an abundance of squid in the
water, getting the fish to bite live bait or artificial lures
has been a bit tricky but today we got the job done. Winds at
20k and water temps in the low 70's should stay the same for the
next few days.
Omar was the first to return around 2pm with 3 Dorado for Harry
and Jerry who were sharing the boat. Omar said he saw tons of
Marlin but most were not interested in bait or lures, he had a
little action from them but no hook-ups. Glad we could get you
guys out there.
Ramon and Cesar were the next to make it back with Brant and
Carol Pate and Lou, Robert and Jade Simmons aboard El Nuevo
RedRum. The Aggieland crew did well with the Horned Frog company
today boating 4 nice Dorado, two over 40 lbs. They also spotted
a ton of Marlin but once again, they couldn't garner any
interest. They are heading over to Misiones de Kino to get the
filets cooked up. Have to say I am a bit jealous. (It is always
in the best interest of "Fish Karma" to offer a filet or two to
the office staff.)
Finally, the top awards for the day go to Javier and Manuel on
Rum Runnin who fished with Andrew Fox, Brandon Martin, Mike
Dwyer and Wendy Weiler. They too headed south 15-20 miles and
trolled dead bait and artificial lures in Petrolero and Black
and Red colors. They were able to land 4 nice Dorado and caught
and released 2 nice Striped Marlin. Congrats guys, hope to see
you back down here soon.
March 31, 2009 - 24 Miles out, 24 beers in a case,
coincidence?
The RedRum boys once again found the fish, they were a
ways out there, but we found them. With warmer water out 20
miles towards the Sea of Cortez, folks had a bit of ride before
we got them on the fish. Still an abundance of squid in the
water, candy for the fish. Nearly every Dorado belly has had
squid in it over the past week or so.
Paul Mattingly, unfortunately was the unlucky angler today.
Heading out with Omar and Americo, which is usually a good sign,
was not super successful today. While they saw fish, and had
some action, they couldn't get anything to stay on long enough
to bring it to the boat.
Greg Trefethen, our east coast buddy, headed out one more time
today(had to get one more day in.) Today's trip was an
anniversary present from his wife. Congrats on 47 years guys.
Greg got all he could handle panga fishing inshore. He caught 10
nice Yellowtail, keeping his limit and giving the meat to both
the RedRum office staff and the crew. (Didn't I just talk about
this yesterday?) Congrats on a great day, Greg,
Eric and Karen McKay headed out for a half-day adventure with
Marshall on the RedBeam and it seemed like the fish started
biting just as their half-day was coming to an end. They were
able to land one nice Dorado and battle a Shark before they
headed back to the Marina.
Laura and Charles Meyers, my dad's neighbors in California, and
their friends James and David Cloonan, Randy Beasley and Jerry
Banning were lucky enough to head out with Alex and Ramon on El
Nuevo. While they too headed for the warm water and the Dorado
that have been roaming the area, they were lucky enough to catch
and release 2 Marlin. Congrats and thanks for coming down to
visit us.
Finally, on Rum Runnin we had Steve Hanson and his crew of
David, Mark and Ryan. Looks like each of the guys got to pull on
a fish as Javier and Manuel were able to hook them up with One
Marlin and Three Dorado. Dorado for dinner, always tasty!
April 1, 2009 - Windy day today in Cabo ...
Wind was blowing good and strong all day, making for a bumpy day
on the water. But, as is usually the case, the fish didn't know
the difference. We sent out 4 boats today, and when the boys got
back this afternoon it looked like they all spread out a bit
today. Alex headed North, Omar West, Javier South and Marshall
went East. All the guys were successful and brought back happy
clients.
Omar and Americo on ReelRum played host to Ron Milford and his
son John. They headed out about 20 miles west in search of the
warm water and calmer seas. After a bumpy ride out, they were
soon on the fish. When it was said and done, Ron and John had
two Trophy Striped Marlin. Ron's was a real bruiser measuring
107 inches and Omar estimated the weight at 230lbs. That has to
be the biggest Stripe of the season. Congrats guys!
John and Sandra Maltry, long time RedRum clients had their boys
out there with them today and they wanted to keep the action
going to keep the boys entertained. They trolled north from the
Lighthouse all the way to Los Arcos looking for the Yellowtail
we found yesterday, to no avail (Yellowtail wise.) They were
able to bring in a couple of Sierra and a nice AmberJack for the
boys before heading a bit offshore. Once they got offshore they
hooked up to Dorado two different times, but couldn't get them
in the boat. Sounds like the boys still had a good day. Hope to
see you back in Cabo soon.
Chad and Sarah from Austin, Texas were next and even though they
came in to Horned Frog country wearing University of Texas gear
we still did our best to get them on fish. Marshall was able to
hook two nice Dorado for them and while they spotted 4 or 5
Marlin, they couldn't get them to bite. Nice meeting you folks.
Finally we had the Hopkin crew on Rum Runnnin. Javier and Manuel
continued their hot streak and brought the Hopkins to where the
fish were. They had a great day bringing in 2 nice Striped
Marlin for release and bringing a Dorado on board. Enjoy those
Dorado filets guys.
April 2, 2009 - Windy and Warm
Cabo San Lucas is experiencing some beautiful clear skies and
sunny weather at 79 degrees with some whipping winds coming in
from the south at 12 mph. The RedRum boats are still heading out
to the Sea of Cortez near the 1150 bank and Punta Gorda bank.
The first boat back was RumRunnin with Javier and Cesar as the
mate today. The crew on board is one of my dearest friends down
here in Cabo, Cindy McIntosh who just celebrated her 40th
birthday! Her husband flew in some of her family and friends
from Windsor and Penticton, Canada as a surprise so they joined
her on board. Stan the Man, friend Lea, brother Darin and friend
Gig. They headed out far about 25 miles to the 1150 bank as well
as outside of Punta Gorda, which is where they encountered their
action for the day. Cindy fought the 45-50 lb Dorado that was
reeled in by a green and black lure. They had 8 huge filets to
take with them that they are going to cook up and enjoy this
evening! So proud of you, Cindy I’ll expect to see the pictures
in my inbox soon.
Finally coming back at about 3:45 is ReelRum with Omar and
Americo. The cute couple Rob and Violet from Pennsylvania headed
out far on the Sea of Cortez. They had their heart set on
catching marlin. Although we gave them a fair warning about
going out that far could mean not catching anything at all, they
wanted to go for it anyway, so 33 miles they went. However, this
is one of the days where the odds were in their favor. All
caught on live bait, they reeled in a nice sized Dorado, 5 Mako
Sharks all catch and release and they almost got their 150 lb.
striped marlin aboard, but lost it right at the boat. It was
Miss. Violet that did the reeling on that monster. Congrats
guys, that is a hell of a day out there.
April 3, 2009 - Dorado, Mako and even Marlin!
It’s sunny once again in Cabo at 79 degrees on land and
72-73 degrees Fahrenheit in the water. A bit windy on land (15
mph coming from SSE) and even windier on the water, a few of our
new friends came back looking a little soaked. Almost made
senator Steve miss the weather back home: the perfect cold
drizzle of Washington D.C. Steve along with eight of his buddies
were out on 33’ El Nuevo and 32’ RedBeam and scored 3 Dorado. Of
course they had to come back to pick up some RedRum merchandise
to show off their skills. Even for 8 guys 3 Dorado can be a bit
much to finish for dinner and so they kindly made a donation to
our crew. Thanks guys!
Picking a fight with a Mako shark and successfully reeling in 2
Marlin was Mike and his two daughters. Mike was mostly
chaperoning for the day, helping his girls reel in the big ones.
Omar and Americo took the family out on our 28’ ReelRum heading
east to the sea of Cortez. The action started 33 miles out, a
nice hour and a half to work on the suntan and gaze at the
leaping whales still gracing our waters. At seven and twelve
years old, there’s no doubt that Claire and Anna will grow up to
be tough fisherwomen.
Some couples find romance in Cabo at a quiet beach while others
like Tom and Caitlyn McCoy and Forest and Amy Glaser headed to
the choppy waters of Baja. There’s nothing more romantic than
reeling in your own dinner to these couples. Reaching Gordo
banks at about 10am on our 32’ RumRunning, Javier and Manuel
knew right where to catch the Dorado. And of course, the girls
had to show their boys how it’s done.
Just to show that a little wind doesn’t scare our fleet!
April 4, 2009 - 6 MARLIN
Some took a look at the weather this morning and decided to stay
in bed to sleep off the hangover; but the cold chill didn’t
scare off our group from Ontario. The result? SIX MARLIN! Omar
and Americo took the guys out an hour and a half from shore and
led them right to the spot. Within ten minutes, two Marlin were
hooked and that’s how it went the rest of the day. Poor guys
barely got a chance to get to the beers. No worries, they’ll
have plenty of time to celebrate their catch (and release) at
their all-inclusive resort.
Detailed count: Peter – 2 striped
'Rick – 2 striped
Red – 1 striped
Billy – the winner of the day, a 160 pound striped Marlin
Highlight (um, besides the Marlin): Captain Omar’s incredible
ability to throw a mackerel right into the mouth of the Marlin.

Fifty-six boats and 255 anglers competed in the Bisbee’s 9th
Annual East Cape Offshore Tournament last week. All that effort
for the three days resulted in 114 billfish…one black, 20
striped, 67 blue marlin and 18 sailfish. There were two
qualifying blues in the Billfish Category, one weighing 306
pounds and one weighing 360 pounds. No qualifying tuna were
caught, and in the Dorado Category three dorado over forty-five
pounds were weighed in.
While the big boys searched for the big
blues, the big roosters were putting on a
show inshore! Closer to the beach, the
smaller roosters whipped the water to a
froth, reminding one of a poorly poured
Pacifico. Over the rocks the pargo snapped
and the ladyfish took flight to throw the
hook.
Small football tuna were scattered. Just the right size for
light tackle or a fly rod.
Tip: When sight casting for roosters and a fish follows don’t
accelerate the fly. Try to let the fish have look by maintaining
or slightly slowing the retrieve. |

Pisces Fleet Sportfishing
Weekly Fish Report
Overall Success Rate: 74%
|
|
BILLFISH: We had another extremely windy week in Cabo
and anglers had to deal with pretty unpleasant seas until
they got past Santa Maria. The fishing however was not that
bad, though difficult to guess where the best spot would be
each day. Fishing ranged from Destiladares on the Cortez
side to 20 miles off of the Old Lighthouse on the Pacific.
Marlin were the predominant game fish species this week but
simply spotting them was not enough, they were pretty fussy
eaters and only wanted the freshest of bait. Some days
captains reported casting bait to 50 fish and hooking up and
fighting just one. Nevertheless sixty one percent of
charters were able to catch from one to five marlin in a
day. One of the best days of the week was June 10th; “Bill
Collector” released five marlin just half a mile off of
Cerro Blanco for Scott and Shannon Taylor from Lakeland,
Florida. This same day “Bandito” also let five marlin go off
of Cabeza de Ballena, all on live bait for Greg and Tom
Langmo form Litchfield, Minnesota, fishing with Harry
Thompson from San Diego. Next day out, Barry Rich from
Dallas, Texas did well to release five stripers aboard
“Spartacus”. “La Brisa” was the only boat to release a
sailfish and also had a striped marlin. Pisces anglers
caught a total of 72 striped marlin, with all but one
released.
OTHER SPECIES: It was on the slow side for other
game, with just fourteen percent of charters catching dorado
and just a handful of boats caught tuna. Those fishing
inshore had an assortment of jack crevalle, bonitas, sierra,
skipjack, yellowtail and roosterfish. The better small game
catches were at La Laguna in San Jose. Mark Chiavetta from
San Jose, California had a spectacular day on June 9th
aboard “Bill Collector”, releasing one striped marlin, one
dorado, one wahoo and 20 roosterfish.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Very windy, seas moderate to
rough. Skies partly cloudy.
LOCATION: Destiladeras, San Jose, Chileno, Barco
Varado, Santa Maria, Cabeza de Ballena, Cabo Real,
Palmilla, Cerro Blanco, La Laguna,11.50 spot, 18 miles off
of Old Lighthouse.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report - April 25th to May 4th 2008
Cabo San Lucas weekly fish report for the Los Cabos area provided by
Captain George Landrum
of Fly Hooker Sportfishing here in Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja
California Sur, Mexico.
WEATHER: We had just another week in paradise with our
daytime highs varying between 90-95 early in the week and 85-90
later in the week. Our nighttime lows varied as well with 75
early in the week and 65 later in the week. That nighttime low
of 75 on Monday and Tuesday night forced us to turn on the air
conditioner! We had partly cloudy skies all week long with winds
at 10-15 knots from the northwest with occasional higher gusts.
WATER: There was little change in the surface conditions
from last week. The Pacific side of the Cape had swells at 3-5
feet and the Cortez side had 1-3 foot swells. The water
temperature on the Cortez side was a pretty even 74-76 degrees
from the shore out to around 12 miles, then it became 67-69
degrees for another 12-20miles, then there was a pretty strong
break where it warmed right back up. On the Pacific side the
temperature remained around 66-69 degrees. On the Pacific side
from the Golden Gate and across the San Jaime Bank and toward
the beach the water was a fairly dirty green, the closer to
shore you got the dirtier it got. This plume of cool, green
water extended to the south of the Cape keeping the water
outside the 1,000-fathom line that dirty green.
BAIT: There was plenty of bait this week as the larger
boat brought in plenty of Mackerel to sell to the Panga bait
boats. With the small moon the bait boats were able to catch
plenty of Caballito as well. This week the bait was the usual
$2 per bait. When we purchased bait on Saturday, our supplier
informed us that as of this coming Wednesday all the boats were
raising their prices to $3 per bait. Keep in mind there has not
been a raise in the bait price for almost 8 years, so this is
not unexpected.
FISHING:
BILLFISH: Once again the billfish were very easy to find
this week, all you had to do was get out on the water. From
just off of the lighthouse on the Pacific side around the Cape
to the Punta Gorda area they were everywhere. Early in the week
they were on the surface sleeping and tailing. Unfortunately,
they were also full! They may have been stuffing themselves on
squid once again, but for whatever the reason, you could throw
baits to 25-30 fish and be lucky to find one or two that were
hungry. A few boats resorted to drifting live baits deep, and
this technique did work a little better than trolling lures
while casting bait to fish on the surface. As the week went on
the fish seemed to move up the Cortez coast just a bit and then
back to in front of the arch. At the end of the week the ratio
of fish baited and fish hooked improved a bit and most boats
that tried to work Marlin were able to catch between two and
four per trip, definitely an improvement over earlier in the
week. Mackerel was the bait of choice; Caballito just didn’t
seem to get the fish interested. The Striped Marlin averaged
around 120 pounds.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: At the beginning of this week all the
purse seiners we had out front last week had gone north, leaving
us with just “scales drifting down” where before we had great
fishing. Of course the fish were not around, they had all moved
out or had been scooped up in the nets! Well, on the positive
side, on Saturday this week the fish re-appeared just two miles
out off the arch and lighthouse. These fish were also a bit
larger with most of them between 20-30 pounds with a few pushing
40 pounds. One hour in the fish resulted in 16 Yellowfin for
one of our groups of anglers. Almost anything worked, as these
fish were very hungry. I went up on the Cortez side on Saturday
and we got into a very larges group of dolphin with birds
everywhere and large schools of bait showing up on the depth
sounder. No Yellowfin though, and I could see two super seiners
just on the horizon to the north, off of Los Frailles. I wonder
if they had already gotten all the fish?
DORADO: The warmer water out front brought more
dorado into our area and most boats were able to get at
least one or two fish per trip. One of my friends was
fishing up off the Punta Gorda area earlier in the week and
found a dead whale that had been around long enough to
attract quite a collection of life under it and was able to
limit out on fish averaging 15 pounds. There were a few
fish in the 30- pound range there as well. Everywhere else
the bite was just all right with bright colored lures and
live bait fished for Marlin getting the most fish.
WAHOO: The moon phase might be wrong for Wahoo this
last week as I did not hear of any of them being caught.
INSHORE: Our anglers tat fished off of Pangas this
week continued to do well with a varied catch including
Roosterfish to 15 pounds, Sierra to 8 pounds, Yellowtail to
15 pounds and an assortment of bottom fish such as snapper
and grouper to 10 pounds. The majority of the fish were
found just off the beach on the Pacific side but when the
late afternoon winds kicked in the afternoon trips worked
off of Gray Rock and Cabo del Sol for the same type of
fish. On Saturday, when the Yellowfin showed up so close to
the arch, almost every Panga out there was in the mix, and
they all did well. Quite a few of the Pangas were working
just off the beach for Marlin as well throughout the week,
and were averaging just about the same as the cruisers.
NOTES: The Seiners left, that’s good news, there are
Tuna out front again, that’s good news! Live bait is going
up in price on Wednesday, that’s bad news! I’m done with
this week’s report, that’s good news! Until next week,
tight lines! Give a listen to the music of an old Fender
Stratocaster player, Dick Dale on his album “Spatial
Disorientation”, that’s weird news!

Weekly fish report based on the catches of Hook Up Fleet Sportfishing,
by Paul Bender.
There is no doubt about it, Cabo San Lucas always has something going on
and that is true right now for Striper Marlin and Tuna especially. Most
all of the best fishing in Cabo San Lucas right now is found on the Sea
of Cortez. And the great news is that the Tuna booming hot spots are
really close in. Just head straight out of the Los Cabos Marina towards
the 95 Spot and all the Tuna you want are located just a sort 8-12 miles
out. Several reason why include the meatballs of bait are some of the
largest concentration of Mackerel we have seen in a long time are out
there plus the sea surfac e temperature has heated to 73 F Degrees.
Also, in this same area you will find plentiful Striper Marlin too.
Hook Up partners with angler Paul Bender and Captain Martin Vigil has
been out there fishing during this fish reporting period. With deckhand
Chino Alucano today, April 7th, on Paul's boat Summertime caught 10 Tuna
and 7 Striper Marlin exactly 7-10 miles straight out. In fact, wanting
really to target Marlin, they pulled the lures in because there were too
many Tuna hits. I mean the fishing and the bite is on! All the Tuna out
there right now are in the 15-25 pound range.Other productive areas are
at the 95, at the 1150 and all spots in-between.
This includes the Horseshoe and along the 1000 Fathom Curve in this area
too. However as stated, most boats these past days are just a short run
8-12 miles and that makes it real nice. On the Pacific Ocean the water
is much colder, like 64-66 F Degrees and just not productive at the
moment. Is it not something how just weeks ago it was all happening on
the Pacific and now it's all about the Sea of Cortez. The inshore along
the beach bit for Sierra, Roosters and Yellowtail has dramatically
slowed. However, still right at the point, Lands End, and around the
corner to the right on the Pacific at Pedragalito still some Yellowtail
are to be found. But with the Tuna explosion nobody really appears to
care.
Now, time to feature a couple of Fishing Warriors who Hooked Up on our
Hook Up Charter Boats. Hailing all the way from Memphis, MI when Ed
Trombley decided to beat the winters cold and go Sportfishing he came to
the right place, Cabo San Lucas Ed boarded our Hook Up I and captain
Alex, with deck-hand Bigotes, knew exactly where the action was at the
very beginning of April. Yes, they traveled out to the Horseshoe and Ed
and friends caught and released one Striper Marlin. What a thrill that
must have been while basking under the Cabo San Lucas Blue Skies. ( See
picture of Ed and his party on Hook Up I with Tuna) But that was not
all! By the end of their fishing adventure they also caught, and did NOT
release, seven (7) Yellowfin Tuna about 15-20 pounds and two Dorado.
Yes Mahi Mahi for dinner anyone. Ed told us, "What a great crew, worked
real hard and we will come again. Had A Blast!!" On April the 5th Hook
Up I took John Gordon out fishing in the Cabo San Lucas waters. John is
from Wintermere, Florida. Thirteen miles straight out from Los Arcos
John hooked up and had the challenge of fighting a Striper Marin.
Captain Alex also took John along the beach and at Pedragalito they
caught 3-Yellowtail. He said, " Great crew but we just could not get the
Marlin to bite more today.
Baja on the
Fly Weekly East Cape Fish Report
East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico
After a two day ‘blow’ late last week, the weather and the time changed
and the fish bit like gang busters! On the outside, skipjack, marlin,
and dorado were feeding on bite sized squid or anything else that came
their way---even flies. Plenty of marlin, dorado and skipjack multiples.
Inshore, ‘same story-different chapter’ as one of our boats had a nice
mix of jacks, roosters, bonito and sierra. Two anglers racked up an
impressive total of 31 fish for the day.
Tip: Don’t forget the wire! There are still a good number of sierra
close to shore.

Cabo San Lucas weekly fish report for the Los Cabos area
provided by Captain George Landrum of Fly Hooker
Sportfishing here in Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja
California Sur, Mexico.
WEATHER: Wow, did we ever have great weather this
week! I was telling my wife yesterday as we were driving
out of town that I wish it was like this every day, then she
reminded me that if it was, there would be too many people
living here! Guess that’s right, I mean it was 11 am and it
was a beautiful 77 degrees out there, and only 67 when we
got up in the morning. We had lightly scattered clouds all
week and this wonderful weather. Sure am glad I was here
this week!
WATER: The winds from the northwest were on again,
off again this week as they kicked up for three days during
the middle of the week. This resulted in rough conditions
on the Pacific side of the Cape and in the Sea of Cortez
offshore. Along with the wind came a strong push from the
California current, bringing water along the Pacific coast
as cold as 61 degrees. On the charts it looks like a finger
cupped around the Cape, pointing toward the east. The
warmer water, in the 71-degree range at the end of the week,
was outside the 1,000-fathom line again. Earlier in the
week it warmed up to 75 degrees in a warm eddy that spun
across from the west to the east, then went beyond our
immediate area. The water between Cabo and the 1150 and
north of that line has been a consistent 71-72 degrees while
the water on the Pacific side offshore has been a much
cooler 67 degrees.
BAIT: Mackerel was easily available at the usual $2
per bait and there were also Caballito at the same price.
BILLFISH: The Striped Marlin bite picked up this
week, not red hot by any means but much better than it has
been. Most of the fish were found outside the 1,000-fathom
line and in the warmer water on the Cortez side. Most of
these fish were on the surface and caught on live bait, but
a few were attracted by lures and bit on drop-back live bait
or were hungry enough to eat the lures. My guess is that
the average was a fish for every other boat, with a few
boats managing to hook up and release two or three per day.
One nice thing I heard early in the week was of a Black
Marlin reported to be in the 400 –pound range being caught
by one of the fleet boats while they were fishing for
football Tuna outside the 1,000-fathom line. That was
reported as happening on Tuesday. A few more Swordfish were
sighted as well, but there were none reported hooked up that
I heard about.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: Football Yellowfin in the 6-15 pound
class continued to be the fish of the week as almost
everyone willing to get out 30 miles was able to get limits,
some more than limits. It usually did not take long as the
fish were very hungry and multiple hook-ups were the norm,
as three or four lines would get hit at the same time.
Boats with just one client aboard went to pulling only one
or two lines. The fish slowly moved to the east over the
course of the week and the best bite was between 180 and 210
degrees during the start of the week and between 170 and 140
degrees at the end of the week. A few boats were able to
get into slightly larger fish averaging 30 pounds at the end
of the week, but rough offshore conditions made keeping
sight of the Dolphin pods hard to do.
DORADO: There were a few more Dorado caught this week
than last week, probably due to the eddy of warm water that
passed our way. Most of the Dorado were caught in the warm
water as boats fished for Tuna. Average size was around 15
pounds but a few boats caught doubles on fish in the
30-pound class.
INSHORE: The rough water on the Pacific side combined
with cold green conditions that started early in the week
meant the inshore fishing was not very good this past week.
That is not to say there were not fish caught, but the
numbers were down from what we had been experiencing. The
Sierra bite was spotty; a good trip resulted in a half-dozen
or so to 10 pounds with the average size around 6 pounds.
There were Pargo found in the rocks at the points and still
a few decent Yellowtail were found.
NOTES: I don’t know if the warming of the water is a
trend that is going to continue, but I sure hope it does.
It seems that the water getting warmer means better fishing
for us. I am going to get out this week and give a few
things I have been working on a try; I’ll let you know next
week if they work out. Until then, try and keep a smile on
your face, things could always be worse. This weeks report
was written to the music of my dog snoring in the background
after a long morning at the beach! Tight Lines!

Pisces Fleet Sport Fishing Weekly Fish Report
BILLFISH: It’s kind of embarrassing to write this
section, this week as there was hardly any marlin, in fact
just four! The boats fortunate enough to catch striped
marlin in the 110 to 150 lb class were “Valerie” with one on
March 14th and one on March 15th, the fish on the 14th was
caught by Mike Walsh from DeKalb, Illinois and the one the
15th by Joseph Smolarz from Houston. “Bandito” also had one
for Robert Roninebeck from Lakeville, Mn, who along with his
group caught three tuna and a dorado. “Eureka” had one on
the 14th, plus eight tuna and a dorado for Sam and Thomas
Silverman from Jupiter Florida. However, we are not at all
worried about these low numbers as boat caught lots of other
fish, mostly tuna and this is what we expect at this time of
year. Local captains say it is breeding time for the marlin,
plus the water temperatures vary and there are many
different currents. Close to Cabo the water was 67-68 F but
further out pockets of 70 to 72 degree water could be found,
and this is what the marlin prefer. Added to this are a few
other factors such as full moon and lots of squid in the
area, which the marlin are feeding on, meaning that they are
not being found as often on the surface. However as we close
this report, “Fearless” reported five marlin caught and
released on March 22nd, so all indicators are that fishing
for marlin will pick up very soon.
OTHER SPECIES: Tuna is king in Cabo right now. Fifty
two percent of charters reeled in anywhere from one to forty
fish in the football class of 10 to 30 lbs, resulting in a
total catch of 483 fish for us this week. Top boat was
“Mucho Bueno” with a forty fish day, (not all were kept) for
Harry Holmes and friends from Scottsdale, Arizona. They
fished 28 miles out at the 210 spot. The tuna were found
over quite a widespread area mostly around Land’s end
between the Old Lighthouse and the 210 spot, form 15 to 30
miles out. Yellowtail fishing is the best it has been in
years……close to Cabo, in calm water, fun for the kids to
catch and plenty of them. Along with these squid have been
abundant with boats catching up to 35 in a day, up to 35
lbs. There are also skipjack, bonita, sierra and amberjack
being caught in lesser numbers.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Some extremely windy days, which
made some anglers turn back seasick. Very cold and windy
early in the week, but now beautiful with calm seas.
LOCATION: 15 to 35 miles out from the Old Lighthouse
and the 210 spot, San Jaime, close to Cabo for smaller game.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69 F
BEST LURES: Cedar plugs, hoochis, iron for
yellowtail, blue and white feathers, rapalas, live bait for
marlin.

Baja on the Fly Weekly East Cape Fish Report
March 20, 2008
East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico
Warmer water and less wind again brought this week
brought some early rooster and jack action up toward
Punta Pescadero and beyond to El Cardonal. Some better
quality fish to 20 lbs. were found crashing on sardina
close to shore. The bait also attracted a mixture of
sierra, pargo and pompano,
Inshore the sierra and white bonito were concentrated in
front of La Ribera and down to Punta Colorada.
Offshore there were rumors of a few marlin out beyond
thirty miles and a few small dorado spread throughout
Palmas bay.
Up at Muertos, the grande yellowtail were still
continuing their early season snap. Also some pargo and
jacks were around to tear up tackle.
Tip: When you get that yellow or pargo bite, set the
hook and reel those first few seconds. It is critical to
keep the fish from darting back into the rocks.
